Job Description

Balfour Beatty is seeking a skilled and dedicated Tunneling Engineer to join our dynamic team based in Sheffield. This is an exceptional opportunity for an engineer with expertise in tunneling projects, eager to contribute to large-scale infrastructure developments across the UK. In this role, you will be instrumental in the design, planning, and execution phases of complex tunneling schemes, ensuring adherence to safety standards, budget, and timelines. Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the design and planning of tunneling projects, including site investigations and feasibility studies.
  • Preparing technical reports, specifications, and design calculations for various tunneling methods (TBM, NATM, cut & cover).
  • Monitoring progress and quality of on-site tunneling operations, ensuring compliance with design specifications and safety regulations.
  • Collaborating with project managers, clients, and other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Identifying and resolving technical issues and challenges during all project phases.
  • Contributing to risk assessments and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in tunneling or underground construction projects.
  • Proficiency in relevant engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, PLAXIS, RocScience).
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical principles and ground investigation techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Eligibility for Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) and visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Tunneling, Geotechnical Engineering, or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards it.
  • Experience with different tunneling methodologies, including TBM, NATM, and cut & cover.
  • Familiarity with UK construction standards and regulations.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
