Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Special Effects (SFX) Workshop Assistant to join our dynamic team in Laramie. This entry-level to junior position is perfect for someone with a foundational understanding of fabrication or artistic principles, eager to learn and grow within the special effects industry. You will provide essential support to our senior technicians and artists, assisting in various stages of prop creation, scenic elements, and practical effects builds. This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced and exciting environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior SFX technicians and artists with the construction and finishing of props, models, and practical effects.
- Prepare materials, including cutting, sanding, molding, and casting various substances (foams, resins, wood, metal).
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored and cared for.
- Perform general workshop duties, including material handling, inventory support, and facility upkeep.
- Operate basic power tools and hand tools under supervision, adhering to all safety guidelines.
- Support on-set or location installations and dismantle operations as needed, requiring occasional travel.
- Learn new fabrication techniques and processes through hands-on experience and direct mentorship.
Required Skills
- Basic proficiency with hand tools (e.g., saws, drills, sanders) and an eagerness to learn more advanced equipment.
- Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively in a team.
- Good physical stamina and ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Basic understanding of workshop safety practices.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
- Creative problem-solving aptitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- 6 months to 1 year of experience in a fabrication, art, theater tech, prop-making, or woodworking environment.
- Familiarity with various materials such as foams, plastics, resins, wood, or metal.
- Background in fine arts, sculpture, industrial design, or related creative fields.
- Experience with painting, sculpting, or scenic artistry.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
