Job Description

The City of Scottsdale is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Marine Patrol Assistant to join our Public Safety team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the safety and well-being of our community members enjoying Scottsdale’s waterways. As a Marine Patrol Assistant, you will work under the direct supervision of Marine Patrol Officers, playing a crucial role in monitoring water recreation, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and providing assistance to the public. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Scottsdale, AZ. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about public service, comfortable working on water, and eager to learn. Full training on watercraft operation specific to our patrol duties will be provided, and all necessary watercraft and equipment are supplied by the department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Marine Patrol Officers in daily operations and enforcement activities on designated waterways.
  • Conduct routine patrols on assigned watercraft to monitor recreational activities and ensure public safety.
  • Educate the public on local boating laws, water safety regulations, and best practices.
  • Respond to calls for assistance from boaters and other water users.
  • Provide basic first aid or support in emergency situations until qualified personnel arrive.
  • Maintain and inspect patrol watercraft, trailers, and associated equipment for operational readiness.
  • Document incidents, observations, and daily activities accurately.
  • Perform basic administrative tasks, such as preparing reports or maintaining logs, as required.
  • Represent the City of Scottsdale with professionalism and a commitment to community service.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid Arizona Driver's License and a clean driving record
  • Ability to obtain Boating Safety Certification within a specified probationary period (training provided)
  • Basic comfort level with water environments and a willingness to learn watercraft operation
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with the public and team members
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various weather conditions, including heat and sun
  • Physical ability to perform duties associated with water patrol, including boarding/unboarding boats, lifting equipment, and standing for extended periods
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a public safety, law enforcement support, or security role
  • Prior experience operating personal watercraft, boats, or similar vehicles
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Familiarity with local Arizona boating laws and regulations
  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a plus
