Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee Environmental Health Officer to join our dynamic public sector team. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for individuals passionate about public health and environmental protection. No prior experience in environmental health is required, as full training and support will be provided to help you develop the necessary skills and knowledge. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning to investigate environmental health issues, enforce regulations, and educate the public on best practices. This role is crucial in safeguarding the health and well-being of our communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shadow and assist qualified Environmental Health Officers in their daily duties.
  • Participate in site visits and inspections related to food safety, health and safety, housing, and environmental protection.
  • Learn to investigate complaints concerning environmental nuisances, pollution, and public health risks.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and enforcement actions under supervision.
  • Develop an understanding of relevant environmental health legislation and policies.
  • Engage with members of the public and businesses to provide advice and promote compliance.
  • Attend training courses and complete assignments as part of a structured development program.

Required Skills

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a science-related discipline (e.g., Environmental Science, Public Health, Biology, Chemistry) or a willingness to work towards a relevant qualification.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new information.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • A keen interest in environmental health and public service.
  • Basic IT proficiency (Microsoft Office suite).
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in customer service or public interaction.
  • A full UK driving license or willingness to obtain one.
  • Knowledge of local government operations.
