Job Description

QEGS Wakefield is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Housemaster or Housemistress to lead one of our esteemed boarding houses. This pivotal role involves providing exceptional pastoral care, fostering a positive and nurturing environment, and ensuring the well-being and development of all students under your charge. You will be a key figure in the students’ daily lives, acting as a mentor, guide, and a point of contact for parents, working collaboratively with the wider school staff to uphold the highest standards of care and academic support. This is a residential position requiring a commitment to the boarding ethos.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily welfare, health, and safety of all students in the boarding house.
  • Cultivate a warm, inclusive, and supportive 'family' atmosphere within the house.
  • Manage house routines, duties, and extracurricular activities.
  • Provide pastoral guidance, mentorship, and support to students, addressing their academic and personal needs.
  • Liaise effectively with parents, academic staff, and medical professionals.
  • Implement and enforce school policies, particularly those related to safeguarding and student conduct.
  • Manage house budgets and resources efficiently.
  • Lead and supervise a team of residential assistants or tutors.
  • Organize and participate in house events and social activities.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a pastoral or leadership role, preferably within an educational or residential setting.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with young people and adults.
  • Strong organizational and administrative abilities.
  • Demonstrated empathy, patience, and resilience.
  • Understanding of safeguarding policies and practices.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Proficiency in basic IT applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant field (e.g., education, social sciences).
  • Previous experience as a Houseparent, Assistant Houseparent, or similar residential role.
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Current First Aid qualification.
  • Knowledge of independent school systems and boarding life.
