Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Youth Worker to join our vibrant Community Support team in Ulverstone, Tasmania. This ongoing full-time position offers a unique opportunity to make a profound difference in the lives of young people aged 12-25. The successful candidate will provide direct support, advocacy, and guidance, working within a strengths-based framework to empower young individuals to navigate challenges, develop life skills, and achieve their full potential. This role involves developing and implementing engaging programs, facilitating access to essential services, and fostering positive relationships with young people, their families, and the wider community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and group support, mentoring, and counselling to young people.
  • Develop, plan, and deliver age-appropriate youth programs and activities focused on skill development, education, and well-being.
  • Advocate on behalf of young people with external agencies, schools, and government departments.
  • Conduct comprehensive needs assessments and develop tailored support plans in collaboration with young people.
  • Connect young people with relevant community resources, services, and referral pathways.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, case notes, and program reports in accordance with organisational policies.
  • Collaborate effectively with families, carers, schools, and other community stakeholders to ensure holistic support.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, supervision, and ongoing professional development initiatives.
  • Respond appropriately to crisis situations, applying de-escalation techniques and adhering to established protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with child safety standards and reporting obligations.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in youth work, social work, community development, or a related field.
  • Tertiary qualification (Diploma or higher) in Youth Work, Social Work, Community Services, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of youth development principles, adolescent psychology, and common issues affecting young people.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with diverse young people.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local community resources and referral pathways within Tasmania.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certificates (or willingness to obtain).
  • Valid Australian Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Current Working with Children Check (WWCC) and National Police Check (or ability to obtain).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with young people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds and culturally diverse communities.
  • Training and experience in trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, or brief intervention strategies.
  • Experience in program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Understanding of mental health first aid principles.
