Job Description

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Environmental Health Officer to join our dedicated team. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with a wide range of environmental health legislation, bylaws, and council policies within the Port Adelaide Enfield area. You will be responsible for conducting inspections, investigating complaints, and providing expert advice on matters pertaining to food safety, public health, waste management, and environmental protection. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and a commitment to community health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting routine and reactive inspections of food premises, public buildings, and other regulated sites.
  • Investigating complaints related to public health nuisances, pollution, and environmental hazards.
  • Enforcing environmental health legislation, council bylaws, and statutory requirements.
  • Providing expert advice and education to businesses and residents on environmental health matters.
  • Preparing detailed reports, maintaining accurate records, and issuing notices or orders as required.
  • Collaborating with internal departments and external agencies on complex compliance issues.
  • Participating in strategic planning and development of environmental health policies and programs.
  • Responding to environmental emergencies and contributing to incident management.
  • Undertaking prosecutions where necessary for breaches of relevant legislation.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health or equivalent qualification recognized in Australia.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant environmental health legislation and regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Current Australian Driver's License.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and record management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a local government environment.
  • Specific expertise in areas such as food safety audits, wastewater management, or contaminated land.
  • Post-graduate qualifications in environmental health or a related field.
  • Membership with Environmental Health Australia (EHA).
