Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Sheet Metal Worker to join our engineering team based in Southport. This is a critical role within our maintenance and fabrication workshops, contributing to the upkeep and enhancement of our rolling stock and operational infrastructure. The successful candidate will be responsible for the precise fabrication, assembly, and repair of metal components, ensuring all work meets rigorous safety and quality standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, assemble, and repair metal components and structures for rolling stock and infrastructure using various sheet metal techniques.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and engineering drawings to determine project specifications.
  • Operate a range of sheet metal machinery including shears, press brakes, rolls, and other power and hand tools.
  • Perform welding (MIG, TIG, Arc) and brazing tasks as required, ensuring strong and clean joints.
  • Measure and mark dimensions and reference points on metal sheets or parts for fabrication.
  • Inspect finished products for accuracy, quality, and adherence to specifications.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety regulations and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure proper care of tools and equipment.
  • Collaborate with other engineering and maintenance teams to complete projects efficiently.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Sheet Metal Worker or similar role.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Skilled in various metal fabrication techniques including shearing, bending, forming, and rolling.
  • Competent in welding processes such as MIG, TIG, and Arc welding.
  • Strong understanding and application of precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, rulers).
  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools common to the trade.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational qualification or apprenticeship in Sheet Metal Fabrication, Welding, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Coded Welder certification).
  • Experience working within the rail, automotive, or heavy engineering sectors.
  • Familiarity with CNC sheet metal machinery operation.
