Job Description
As a Biosecurity Officer, you will be integral to protecting Australia’s borders from potential biosecurity threats. This dynamic role involves inspecting international cargo, postal articles, vessels, and passengers, enforcing biosecurity legislation, and conducting risk assessments. You will operate in various environments, from ports and airports to post offices and freight depots, ensuring compliance and responding to detected threats.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections of incoming goods, cargo, vessels, aircraft, and passengers for biosecurity risks.
- Identify, assess, and manage potential biosecurity threats including pests, diseases, and contaminated products.
- Enforce Australian biosecurity legislation, regulations, and policies.
- Issue directions, notices, and permits as required under biosecurity laws.
- Collect and manage samples for laboratory analysis.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports on inspection activities and findings.
- Provide clear and concise biosecurity advice to stakeholders, importers, and the public.
- Participate in emergency response activities for biosecurity incursions.
- Operate and maintain specialized biosecurity equipment and tools.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated understanding of biosecurity principles and practices.
- Ability to interpret and apply complex legislation and policies.
- Strong observational and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in using standard office software and data entry systems.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Physical fitness to perform duties including lifting, standing, and working in varied environments.
- Valid Australian Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in agriculture, environmental science, biology, veterinary science, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a regulatory, enforcement, or inspection role.
- Experience in risk assessment and management.
- Knowledge of Australian import conditions and international trade regulations.
- First Aid Certificate.
