Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Archaeologist / Heritage Manager to join our growing team in Derry/Londonderry. This role is crucial for managing archaeological investigations, heritage impact assessments, and providing expert advice on complex development projects across Northern Ireland. You will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with archaeological and heritage legislation, contributing to environmental impact assessments, and liaising with statutory bodies and clients. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on diverse projects and make a tangible difference in heritage preservation. Visa sponsorship is available for suitable international candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee archaeological fieldwork, including evaluations, excavations, and watching briefs.
- Conduct heritage impact assessments and provide expert advice on the archaeological implications of development proposals.
- Prepare high-quality archaeological reports, desk-based assessments, and written schemes of investigation.
- Liaise effectively with clients, statutory bodies (e.g., Historic Environment Division), and local planning authorities.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
- Ensure all work adheres to relevant archaeological standards, legislation, and health and safety guidelines.
- Contribute to tender proposals and project bids for new heritage contracts.
- Undertake post-excavation analysis and manage artefact processing and curation.
Required Skills
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in archaeology or heritage management.
- Strong understanding of UK and Northern Irish archaeological legislation and planning policy.
- Proven experience in managing archaeological projects from inception to completion.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
- Proficiency in GIS software for mapping and data analysis.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid UK driving license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Archaeology, Heritage Management, or a related field.
- Membership in the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) at Associate or Member level.
- Experience with environmental impact assessment (EIA) processes.
- Familiarity with the archaeology of Northern Ireland.
