Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Avian & Exotic Animal Vet Intern to join our specialized team. This internship offers an unparalleled opportunity for recent veterinary graduates or current students to gain hands-on experience in the challenging and rewarding field of avian and exotic animal medicine. You will work closely with experienced veterinarians and technicians, assisting in diagnostics, treatments, and surgical procedures for a diverse range of non-traditional pets, including birds, reptiles, small mammals, and amphibians. This role is designed to provide comprehensive training and mentorship, building a strong foundation for a career in exotic animal veterinary care.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians with examinations, diagnostics, and treatments for avian and exotic animal patients.
- Prepare and monitor patients during surgical procedures under direct supervision.
- Perform basic animal husbandry, feeding, and care for hospitalized exotic patients.
- Maintain detailed patient records and assist with client communication.
- Participate in daily rounds, case discussions, and educational presentations.
- Learn and apply advanced diagnostic techniques specific to exotic species.
- Ensure the cleanliness and sterilization of equipment and facilities.
- Provide compassionate and humane care to all animals.
Required Skills
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent, or currently enrolled in a veterinary program.
- Demonstrated passion and interest in avian and exotic animal medicine.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
- Basic animal handling skills, with a focus on gentle and safe techniques.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or externship experience in an avian or exotic animal veterinary setting.
- Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., AAV, ARAV, AEMV).
- Basic knowledge of common avian and exotic animal species and their care requirements.
