Job Description

Are you passionate about the outdoors and eager to start a rewarding career caring for our urban trees? Thanet District Council is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic City Arborist Assistant / Tree Surgeon Trainee to join our dedicated Parks and Open Spaces team. This is a fantastic entry-level opportunity for someone with no prior experience in arboriculture. We provide full training and support to help you develop into a skilled tree surgeon, contributing to the health and safety of Margate’s valuable tree population.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist qualified arborists with all aspects of tree maintenance, including pruning, felling, planting, and disease identification.
  • Learn to safely operate and maintain a range of arborist equipment, under supervision.
  • Support ground operations, including clearing branches, chipping wood, and site clean-up.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Participate in emergency tree work and storm response as required.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of tools and vehicles.
  • Engage with the public professionally and courteously when on-site.

Required Skills

  • Eagerness to learn and a strong work ethic.
  • Good physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Commitment to health and safety.
  • A valid UK driving license (preferred, but not essential to start).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of trees or horticulture.
  • Previous experience in manual labor or outdoor work.
  • First Aid certification.
