Job Description

Join Lifeline Australia as a Text Based Crisis Support Worker and make a profound difference from anywhere in Australia. This is a unique opportunity to provide vital, confidential support to individuals experiencing emotional distress and suicidal thoughts, all through a text-based platform. You will be part of a compassionate and highly trained team dedicated to saving lives and fostering mental well-being across the nation. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to contribute to meaningful work from the comfort and safety of your home, after completing our comprehensive, fully paid training program. No prior direct crisis support experience is required; we are looking for individuals with a genuine desire to help others and a commitment to our mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with individuals experiencing crisis via text message, providing empathetic, non-judgmental, and active listening support.
  • Assess immediate risk and implement appropriate safety plans and interventions following established protocols.
  • Help callers explore feelings, identify strengths, and connect with resources that can support their well-being.
  • Document interactions accurately and concisely within our secure system.
  • Adhere strictly to confidentiality and ethical guidelines.
  • Participate in ongoing training, supervision, and team debriefs to ensure continuous professional development and support.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional written communication skills, with clarity, empathy, and sensitivity.
  • Strong active listening skills and the ability to process information quickly and accurately.
  • High level of emotional resilience and self-awareness.
  • Reliability and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Proficiency in using digital communication platforms and basic computer skills.
  • Commitment to completing and excelling in our intensive crisis support training program.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a remote team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in customer service, support roles, or volunteer work.
  • Understanding of mental health challenges and suicide prevention principles.
  • A background in social work, psychology, counselling, or related fields (though not essential for entry).
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
