Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Data Privacy Officer to join our team in Ottawa. This critical role involves overseeing our data protection strategy and its implementation to ensure compliance with global privacy regulations, including GDPR and CCPA. The successful candidate will be responsible for advising the organization on data protection matters, monitoring compliance, and acting as a contact point with supervisory authorities and data subjects. This position offers visa sponsorship for qualified international candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement data protection policies and procedures in compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and other relevant privacy laws.
- Advise on and monitor compliance with data protection laws, internal data protection policies, and accountability measures.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for data protection authorities and data subjects regarding privacy matters.
- Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and provide guidance on privacy by design and default.
- Oversee the handling of data subject requests, including access, rectification, erasure, and portability.
- Provide training and awareness programs to employees on data privacy best practices and legal requirements.
- Manage data breach incidents, including investigation, containment, and notification processes.
- Collaborate with legal, security, and IT teams to ensure integrated data protection strategies.
- Stay updated on developments in data protection laws and best practices, adapting organizational strategies accordingly.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in global data protection laws and practices, including GDPR and CCPA.
- Strong understanding of information security principles and data governance frameworks.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to communicate complex legal and technical information clearly and concisely.
- Experience in conducting privacy impact assessments and managing data subject requests.
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/E, CIPP/US) or Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) certification.
- Bachelor's degree in Law, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Experience with privacy management software and tools.
- Familiarity with ISO 27001 or other information security standards.
- Previous experience in a DPO or similar privacy compliance role within a large multinational organization.
