Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Fine Art Conservator / Restorer to join our passionate team. This pivotal role involves the examination, documentation, conservation, and restoration of a wide range of artworks and artifacts within our permanent collection. The successful candidate will apply specialized knowledge and practical skills to ensure the long-term preservation of our cultural assets, adhering to the highest ethical and professional standards in conservation. This position offers the opportunity to work with diverse materials and contribute significantly to our mission. For exceptional international candidates, support for obtaining necessary work authorization (such as an LMIA for a Canadian work permit) may be available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough examination and analysis of artworks and artifacts to assess their condition and identify deterioration mechanisms.
  • Develop and execute appropriate conservation and restoration treatments, including cleaning, consolidation, repair, and aesthetic reintegration.
  • Maintain detailed written and photographic documentation of all examination findings, treatment proposals, and completed conservation work.
  • Monitor and control environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light) within exhibition and storage areas to minimize further degradation.
  • Advise on best practices for handling, display, storage, and transportation of collection items.
  • Collaborate with curators, registrars, and other staff on collection management, exhibition planning, and loan requests.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response planning for the collection.
  • Stay abreast of new developments, techniques, and materials in the field of art conservation through professional development and research.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Conservation of Fine Art, Conservation Studies, or a closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable practical experience in the conservation and restoration of fine art or museum artifacts.
  • Proficiency in various conservation techniques and materials appropriate for paintings, sculpture, works on paper, or other specialized areas.
  • Excellent diagnostic and analytical skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong knowledge of conservation ethics and professional standards (e.g., AIC, ICON).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for documentation and reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialization in a particular medium (e.g., oil paintings, textiles, ethnographic objects).
  • Experience with scientific analytical techniques (e.g., microscopy, IR, UV).
  • Proficiency with collection management software.
  • Fluency in French is an asset.
