Job Description

Are you passionate about animal welfare and looking for a career that makes a real difference in your community? The Town of Baie Verte is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our team as an Animal Control Officer Trainee. This is a unique entry-level opportunity for individuals with no prior experience in animal control. We provide comprehensive, hands-on training to equip you with all the necessary skills and knowledge to become a certified Animal Control Officer. This outdoor role involves significant public interaction and physical activity, working directly within the community to ensure the safety and well-being of animals and residents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all provided training programs to learn animal control procedures, bylaws, and safety protocols.
  • Respond to and investigate calls regarding stray, lost, injured, or deceased animals under supervision.
  • Learn proper techniques for the safe and humane capture, handling, and transportation of animals.
  • Assist in enforcing municipal bylaws related to animal ownership, licensing, and public safety.
  • Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and relevant community resources.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents, animal impoundments, and investigations.
  • Assist with the care and feeding of impounded animals, ensuring their welfare.
  • Patrol designated areas to identify and address animal-related issues.
  • Collaborate with other municipal departments and local animal welfare organizations.

Required Skills

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
  • Genuine compassion and concern for the well-being of animals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for public interaction.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new situations.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a calm demeanor under pressure.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform duties in various weather conditions and terrains.
  • Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Prior experience in customer service or public-facing roles.
  • Familiarity with the Baie Verte area and community.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
