Job Description
Are you passionate about plants and eager to kickstart a career in an outdoor retail environment? B&Q Catford is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Garden Center Watering Assistant to join our team. In this entry-level role, you will play a crucial part in maintaining the health and beauty of our extensive range of plants, ensuring they are well-cared for and presented beautifully for our customers. Full training will be provided, making this an ideal opportunity for someone with a strong work ethic and a love for gardening, even without prior professional experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily watering of all plants within the garden centre, adjusting techniques based on plant type and weather conditions.
- Monitor plant health, identifying any signs of pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies and reporting them to senior staff.
- Assist with moving and merchandising plants, ensuring displays are attractive and well-stocked.
- Help maintain a clean and organised garden centre environment, including sweeping, tidying, and clearing debris.
- Provide basic customer assistance and direction when requested, maintaining a friendly and helpful demeanour.
- Ensure all watering equipment is clean, maintained, and safely stored.
Required Skills
- A genuine passion for plants and gardening.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to plant care.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and carrying (within safe limits), and standing for extended periods.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a retail or customer service environment (even non-gardening related).
- Basic knowledge of different plant types and their care requirements (from personal hobbies or interests).
- First Aid certification (not essential, but a plus).
