Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic and passionate Journalist to join our team in Leeds. The successful candidate will be instrumental in covering local news, current affairs, and community stories that resonate with our readers across the Leeds metropolitan area. This role requires a proactive approach to newsgathering, excellent writing skills, and a strong commitment to journalistic integrity. You will be expected to generate original content, conduct interviews, and contribute to our multi-platform news output, ensuring we remain at the forefront of local reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Research, investigate, and write engaging news stories, features, and reports for various platforms (online, print, social media).
- Conduct interviews with sources, community members, and officials, ensuring accuracy and balance.
- Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts within the Leeds community.
- Attend press conferences, council meetings, and other relevant local events.
- Utilize social media and other digital tools to break news and engage with audiences.
- Fact-check and edit content to ensure journalistic standards and legal compliance.
- Work collaboratively with editors, photographers, and videographers to produce compelling multimedia content.
- Respond to breaking news situations swiftly and accurately.
- Contribute to the strategic development of content and audience engagement.
- Adhere to the highest ethical standards of journalism and media law.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Journalist or Reporter, preferably in a local news environment.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities.
- Strong interview and research skills.
- Proficiency in using digital publishing tools and content management systems.
- Demonstrable understanding of media law and journalistic ethics.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong news judgment and an ability to identify compelling local stories.
- Proficiency in social media for news dissemination and audience engagement.
- Full UK driving license and access to a car (desirable for covering local area).
Preferred Qualifications
- NCTJ or equivalent journalism qualification.
- Degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field.
- Experience with multimedia content creation (photography, video editing).
- Demonstrable portfolio of published work, especially local news reports.
- Familiarity with SEO best practices for digital content.
