Job Description
We are seeking a visionary and experienced Library Director / Head Archivist to lead our dedicated team in Stourbridge. This pivotal role involves overseeing all aspects of our library and archival collections, from acquisition and preservation to public access and digital initiatives. The successful candidate will be a strategic leader, an expert in both library science and archival management, and possess a deep appreciation for cultural heritage. You will be responsible for developing and implementing policies, managing budgets, fostering staff development, and enhancing our reputation as a leading heritage institution. This position is open to international candidates who can demonstrate the required expertise and commitment to our mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and management for all library and archival operations.
- Oversee the acquisition, cataloguing, preservation, and conservation of all collections.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures in line with best practices for library and archival management.
- Manage departmental budgets, resources, and grant applications.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of librarians, archivists, and support staff.
- Enhance public access to collections through outreach programs, exhibitions, and digital platforms.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to promote the Trust's mission.
- Ensure compliance with copyright, data protection, and other relevant legislation.
- Contribute to fundraising initiatives and donor relations.
- Represent the Trust at national and international professional conferences and events.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a library or archival setting.
- Demonstrable expertise in collection management, preservation, and digital archiving.
- Strong understanding of library and archival standards and best practices.
- Proven ability to manage budgets and secure funding.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in library management systems and archival descriptive standards.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and international stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate in a relevant discipline.
- Experience with international cultural heritage collaborations.
- Familiarity with the history and heritage of the West Midlands / Black Country.
- Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., CILIP, ARA).
