Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Microbiology Intern to join our diagnostic laboratory team in Bendigo. This hands-on placement offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in clinical microbiology, working alongside experienced scientists and pathologists. The intern will be exposed to various aspects of diagnostic testing, from sample reception and processing to culture techniques, identification, and susceptibility testing. This role is ideal for individuals looking to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world clinical setting and develop foundational laboratory skills essential for a career in diagnostic pathology. Full training and mentorship will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the reception and processing of microbiology samples.
  • Preparing culture media and reagents according to standard operating procedures.
  • Performing basic culturing and inoculation techniques under supervision.
  • Aiding in the setup and monitoring of automated microbiology systems.
  • Supporting data entry and documentation related to patient samples and test results.
  • Participating in quality control activities and maintaining laboratory equipment.
  • Adhering strictly to laboratory safety protocols and NATA accreditation standards.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of microbiology principles and laboratory safety.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).
  • Eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Previous laboratory experience (academic or volunteer) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated interest in diagnostic pathology or clinical microbiology.
