Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Patent Attorney to join our thriving Intellectual Property team in Cardiff. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of patent matters, advising clients on patentability, freedom to operate, infringement, and validity, and actively contributing to the growth and reputation of our practice. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work with a range of innovative clients, from start-ups to multinational corporations, across various industries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), European Patent Office (EPO), and coordinating international filings.
  • Conducting patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement, and validity searches and providing opinions.
  • Advising clients on all aspects of intellectual property strategy and portfolio management.
  • Managing patent portfolios for a diverse client base, ensuring compliance and strategic alignment.
  • Representing clients in contentious matters, including oppositions and appeals.
  • Providing strategic IP advice during M&A transactions and commercial agreements.
  • Engaging in business development activities and building strong client relationships.

Required Skills

  • Qualified UK and/or European Patent Attorney.
  • Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science).
  • Demonstrable experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant technical field.
  • Experience with patent litigation support.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of client business needs.
  • Proficiency in Welsh language is a plus but not required.
