Job Description

The Bristol Emergency Communications Centre is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Public Safety Telecommunicators. No prior experience is required as we offer comprehensive, full paid training to equip you with all the skills needed to excel in this critical role. As a Telecommunicator, you will be the reassuring voice on the other end of the line, gathering vital information during emergencies and dispatching appropriate resources to those in need. This is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding position that demands quick thinking, empathy, and a strong commitment to public service.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer incoming 999 emergency calls from the public quickly and professionally.
- Gather critical information accurately and efficiently to assess the nature and severity of incidents.
- Prioritize calls and determine the appropriate emergency service response (Police, Fire, or Ambulance).
- Dispatch emergency responders to incident locations using computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers in life-threatening situations until emergency personnel arrive.
- Maintain clear, concise, and accurate records of all calls and dispatched units.
- Monitor emergency service radio traffic and track responder locations.
- Communicate effectively and calmly with callers experiencing stress, fear, or panic.
- Collaborate seamlessly with other telecommunicators, supervisors, and emergency service personnel.
Required Skills

- Ability to remain calm, focused, and composed in high-stress, emergency situations.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to make swift, accurate decisions.
- Proficiency in basic computer operation and data entry.

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a customer service or high-pressure environment.
- Familiarity with Bristol and surrounding geographic areas.
- Demonstrated ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
- Basic first aid or CPR certification.
