Job Description

Alberni Valley Refugee & Newcomer Support is seeking compassionate and dedicated individuals to join our team as Public Sector Asylum & Refugee Support Workers. This is a unique entry-level opportunity designed for individuals eager to contribute to public service, even without prior experience in the field. We provide full, comprehensive training to equip you with all the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this vital role. You will work directly with asylum seekers and refugees, offering guidance, support, and resources to help them navigate their new environment and legal processes in Canada. This role is crucial for ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive the assistance they need during a challenging transition.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct support and advocacy to asylum seekers and refugees, including initial intake and needs assessment.
- Assist clients with understanding and accessing public services such as healthcare, education, and social assistance programs.
- Guide clients through immigration and asylum claim processes, including paperwork and appointment scheduling.
- Connect clients with community resources, legal aid, housing options, and language learning opportunities.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records in accordance with organizational and public sector guidelines.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance support skills and knowledge of relevant policies.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure coordinated and holistic client support.
- Advocate for client rights and needs within the broader community and public sector frameworks.
- Support clients in overcoming cultural barriers and adjusting to life in Canada.

- Volunteer experience in social services, community outreach, or humanitarian aid.
- Knowledge of local community resources in Port Alberni.
- Post-secondary education in social work, public administration, international relations, or a related field (not required, but an asset).
