Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Welding Inspector / Metallurgist to join our dynamic team in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This role is pivotal in ensuring the quality, integrity, and safety of welding processes and metallic components across various industrial projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for applying expertise in welding metallurgy, inspection techniques, and materials science to uphold the highest standards. You will work on challenging projects, collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, and contribute to the successful delivery of complex engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform visual inspections and non-destructive testing (NDT) on welds, materials, and fabrications in accordance with project specifications and industry codes.
- Review and approve welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance qualifications (WPQ).
- Conduct material inspections, including verification of material test reports and ensuring compliance with material specifications.
- Provide metallurgical analysis and recommendations for material selection, failure analysis, and corrosion prevention.
- Monitor welding processes, ensuring adherence to approved procedures, quality control plans, and safety standards.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and communicate findings to project management and relevant stakeholders.
- Liaise with clients, third-party inspectors, and project teams to resolve technical issues related to welding and metallurgy.
- Ensure all work is conducted in compliance with relevant codes (e.g., ASME, AWS, CSA, API) and company quality assurance policies.
- Participate in root cause analysis for welding defects or material failures and propose corrective actions.
Required Skills
- Certification as a Welding Inspector (e.g., CWB, AWS CWI, CSWIP, API 570/510/653).
- Strong understanding of welding processes, metallurgy, material science, and NDT methods.
- Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and welding symbols.
- Knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.3, ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, CSA W59).
- Ability to perform detailed visual inspections and interpret NDT results.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Welding Engineering, or a related field.
- Additional NDT certifications (e.g., UT, PT, MT, RT interpretation).
- Experience with failure analysis and corrosion engineering.
- Previous experience in heavy industrial, oil & gas, or infrastructure projects.
- Project management or team leadership experience.
