Job Description
Are you ready to launch a career in an exciting, high-tech field with one of Southern California’s leading utility providers? SDG&E is seeking a Public Utilities Drone Pilot Trainee to join our dynamic team in Oceanside, CA. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals eager to learn the fundamentals of aerial surveying and drone operation for critical infrastructure inspection. No prior drone piloting experience is required; we provide comprehensive training from the ground up, including preparation for FAA Part 107 certification. You’ll gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge drone technology, contributing to the safety and efficiency of public utilities while developing valuable, in-demand skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in all provided drone operation and aerial surveying training programs.
- Assist certified drone pilots with pre-flight checks, mission planning, and equipment setup.
- Learn to safely and efficiently operate Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for data collection.
- Process and review collected aerial data under supervision for quality assurance.
- Maintain detailed flight logs and equipment maintenance records.
- Adhere strictly to all FAA regulations, company safety protocols, and operational guidelines.
- Collaborate with various utility departments to understand project requirements and objectives.
- Support data analysis and reporting functions as needed.
- Perform routine maintenance and charging of drone equipment.
- Continuously develop knowledge of drone technology and utility infrastructure inspection techniques.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
- Eagerness to learn new technologies and embrace continuous training.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Physical ability to lift and carry drone equipment (up to 25 lbs) and stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or technical certification in a related field (e.g., aviation, GIS, engineering).
- Prior experience with photography, videography, or remote-controlled vehicles.
- Familiarity with GIS software or mapping concepts.
- Willingness to obtain FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate upon hire.
