Job Description
Join National Grid as a Public Utilities Meter Reader, where you will play a crucial role in ensuring accurate billing and operational efficiency by reading gas and electric meters. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, value independence, and are committed to accuracy. While this role involves independent work, comprehensive training will be provided to ensure you are fully prepared to navigate routes safely and efficiently. You will be responsible for collecting meter data using handheld electronic devices, identifying and reporting any unusual conditions, and maintaining positive customer relations during your route. Key Responsibilities
- Accurately read and record meter data for residential and commercial customers using handheld electronic devices.
- Follow established routes and schedules to ensure timely completion of meter reading assignments.
- Walk extensive routes daily, traversing diverse terrain and properties.
- Inspect meters for damage, tampering, or unusual conditions and report findings promptly.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies.
- Interact courteously and professionally with customers while on routes.
- Maintain accurate records and communicate any issues encountered during meter reading.
- Report safety hazards or suspicious activities observed in the field.
- Perform minor maintenance or adjustments to meters as authorized and trained.
Required Skills
- Ability to walk long distances daily in various weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to learn and effectively use handheld electronic devices and navigation tools.
- Comfortable working independently for extended periods.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for customer interactions.

- Basic problem-solving skills to address minor field issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Previous experience in a role requiring outdoor work or route-based activities.
- Familiarity with the Worcester, MA area and its geography.
- Ability to work with a diverse customer base.
