Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Radiation Protection Advisor to join our safety team in Milwaukee, WI. This critical role ensures the safety of patients, staff, and the public from potential radiation hazards across our facilities. The Radiation Protection Advisor will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing radiation safety programs, conducting comprehensive surveys, and ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. This position is vital to maintaining our high standards of safety and operational integrity. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive radiation safety programs for all hospital departments utilizing radiation sources.
- Conduct regular radiation surveys, inspections, and audits of equipment and facilities to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to medical staff, researchers, and technicians on safe radiation practices and procedures.
- Investigate radiation-related incidents, recommend corrective actions, and prepare detailed reports.
- Deliver comprehensive training to staff on radiation safety, dosimetry, emergency procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of radiation exposure for personnel and ensure appropriate protective measures are in place.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies (e.g., NRC, state health departments) during inspections and provide necessary documentation.
- Assist in the procurement, safe handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.
- Participate in emergency response planning and drills related to radiation incidents.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a related scientific field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in radiation safety, preferably within a healthcare or research institution.
- In-depth knowledge of radiation protection principles, regulations (NRC, OSHA, state regulations), and best practices.
- Proficiency in operating and calibrating radiation detection and measurement equipment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Relevant professional certification (e.g., Certified Health Physicist – CHP) is highly preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Health Physics or a related field.
- Experience with medical accelerators, nuclear medicine, and diagnostic radiology.
- Familiarity with radiation safety software and dose management systems.
- Proven track record of successful regulatory audit outcomes.
- Experience in developing and delivering radiation safety training programs.
