Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Radiation Protection Advisor to join our team in Oxford. This critical role involves ensuring the highest standards of radiation safety are maintained across our operations, particularly within healthcare and research environments utilizing advanced medical imaging and diagnostic equipment. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust radiation protection programs, providing expert advice, and ensuring full compliance with national and international regulations. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation safety programs and procedures in line with national regulations (e.g., IRR17) and company policies.
- Provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of radiation protection to staff, management, and external partners.
- Conduct regular radiation risk assessments, audits, and inspections of facilities and equipment to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
- Oversee the calibration, maintenance, and safe use of radiation monitoring equipment.
- Investigate radiation incidents, near misses, and provide recommendations for corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Deliver radiation safety training to employees at all levels, ensuring a high level of awareness and competency.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies (e.g., HSE, Environment Agency) and act as a primary point of contact for radiation protection matters.
- Maintain accurate records of radiation doses, safety audits, equipment calibrations, and training.
- Stay abreast of developments in radiation protection legislation, best practices, and technology.
Required Skills
- Degree in Physics, Radiation Protection, Health Physics, or a closely related scientific discipline.
- Proven experience as a Radiation Protection Advisor or in a similar radiation safety role, preferably within a medical or research environment.
- In-depth knowledge of UK radiation protection legislation and guidelines, including Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) and Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR10).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, capable of advising and influencing stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in risk assessment methodologies related to radiation sources.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current certification as a Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA) by a recognised body.
- Postgraduate qualification in Radiation Protection or a related field.
- Experience with a variety of radiation sources and equipment, including X-ray systems, radioactive isotopes, and linear accelerators.
- Familiarity with medical imaging modalities and associated radiation safety aspects.
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., Society for Radiological Protection).
