Job Description

Join the City of Mount Gambier Council as a Resource Recovery Hand at our busy Council Recycling Center. In this vital role, you will contribute directly to our environmental sustainability efforts by assisting with the efficient sorting, processing, and management of recyclable materials. This is a hands-on position requiring physical stamina, attention to detail, and a commitment to workplace safety. You will be part of a supportive team dedicated to making a positive impact on our local environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sorting and separating various recyclable materials (e.g., plastics, paper, cardboard, glass, metals) according to established guidelines.
  • Operating basic machinery and equipment used in the sorting and processing of waste materials (e.g., balers, forklifts – training provided if required).
  • Maintaining a clean and organised work environment within the recycling center.
  • Assisting with the loading and unloading of materials, ensuring safe handling practices.
  • Identifying and diverting non-conforming materials.
  • Adhering strictly to all workplace health and safety procedures and regulations.
  • Performing general labouring tasks as directed by the site supervisor.

Required Skills

  • Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to procedures.
  • Basic understanding of environmental best practices or a willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a similar waste management, recycling, or labouring role.
  • Current C-class driver's license.
  • Forklift license (LF) or willingness to obtain.
  • Knowledge of different recyclable materials and their sorting requirements.
