Job Description

Stewart Christie & Co. is seeking a skilled and meticulous Sewing Machinist to join our dedicated team in Edinburgh. This role is crucial to the creation of our high-quality bespoke garments and accessories. The ideal candidate will possess excellent machine operating skills, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for craftsmanship. You will work with a variety of luxurious fabrics and contribute directly to the production of garments that uphold our centuries-old reputation for excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate industrial sewing machines, including single-needle, overlock, and specialised machines, with precision and efficiency.
  • Perform various sewing operations such as seaming, topstitching, hemming, and attaching components on a range of fabrics from delicate silks to heavy tweeds.
  • Follow technical specifications, patterns, and design instructions accurately to ensure garments meet Stewart Christie & Co.'s exacting standards.
  • Inspect fabric for flaws and finished garments for quality, rectifying any issues promptly.
  • Maintain a clean and organised workstation and ensure all machinery is in good working order.
  • Collaborate with tailors, cutters, and other workshop team members to achieve project deadlines and quality objectives.
  • Assist with basic garment alterations and repairs as required.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Sewing Machinist, preferably within a luxury apparel, tailoring, or textile environment.
  • Proficiency in operating various industrial sewing machines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and precision in all sewing tasks.
  • Strong understanding of garment construction techniques and quality standards.
  • Ability to work accurately with a wide range of fabrics.
  • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal qualification in fashion design, garment technology, or textile arts.
  • Experience with bespoke tailoring or Highlandwear.
  • Familiarity with pattern reading and fabric cutting.
  • Knowledge of different stitch types and their applications.
