Job Description

The Brisbane City Council is seeking a dedicated and passionate Sustainability Officer to join our environmental team in Toowong. This role is pivotal in supporting the development and implementation of sustainable practices across council operations and community initiatives. You will contribute to projects focused on energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, and biodiversity protection, helping to shape a more resilient future for Brisbane. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the research, development, and implementation of council sustainability policies and programs.
  • Monitor and report on environmental performance metrics, including energy consumption, waste generation, and water usage.
  • Engage with council departments to identify opportunities for sustainable improvements in their operations.
  • Support community engagement initiatives and educational campaigns related to environmental sustainability.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and communication materials on sustainability projects and outcomes.
  • Conduct site visits and assessments to evaluate current environmental practices and identify areas for improvement.
  • Keep abreast of relevant environmental legislation, best practices, and technological advancements.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of environmental sustainability principles and practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to environmental performance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Management, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working in a local government or public sector environment.
  • Knowledge of local environmental regulations and policies in Queensland.
  • Experience with project management or coordinating environmental initiatives.
