Job Description

The Spokane Regional Health District is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Environmental Health Officer to join our vital public sector team. This entry-level position is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience in environmental health, offering comprehensive training and mentorship to develop the skills necessary to become a fully qualified Environmental Health Officer. You will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health by ensuring compliance with environmental health regulations, conducting inspections, and responding to community concerns under the guidance of experienced professionals. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured training program to learn environmental health principles, regulations, and investigative techniques.
  • Shadow experienced Environmental Health Officers during inspections of various facilities (e.g., restaurants, water systems, childcare facilities).
  • Assist with data collection, record-keeping, and report generation related to environmental health investigations.
  • Learn to identify potential public health hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Communicate effectively with the public and business owners regarding environmental health standards and best practices.
  • Under supervision, respond to citizen inquiries and complaints related to environmental health issues.
  • Participate in community outreach and education initiatives related to environmental health.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all activities and observations.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Demonstrated interest in public health, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply complex regulations and scientific principles.
  • Excellent observational and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License or ability to obtain one.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to public service and community well-being.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
  • Previous volunteer or internship experience in a public health or regulatory environment.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental health regulations.
