Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and skilled Upcycling Furniture Restorer to join our dedicated workshop team in Hamilton. This is a unique opportunity to apply your creative and practical skills to breathe new life into pre-loved furniture, transforming pieces into desirable items for sale in our British Heart Foundation stores. You will be instrumental in reducing waste, promoting sustainability, and directly contributing to our life-saving research. This role requires a blend of traditional restoration techniques, innovative upcycling ideas, and a keen eye for design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess incoming furniture for restoration and upcycling potential.
  • Perform various restoration tasks including cleaning, sanding, stripping, repairing, and re-finishing.
  • Execute creative upcycling projects, applying painting, upholstery, decoupage, or other decorative techniques.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, adhering to all health and safety guidelines.
  • Manage and maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order.
  • Source and manage materials required for projects, optimizing for cost-effectiveness and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with store teams to understand current trends and customer preferences to maximize sales potential.
  • Document before-and-after projects for promotional and educational purposes.
  • Provide guidance and share knowledge with volunteers or junior staff where appropriate.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in furniture restoration, repair, or upcycling.
  • Proficiency in various woodworking techniques and tool usage.
  • Strong understanding of different furniture materials and finishes (wood, metal, fabric).
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
  • Creative flair and ability to envision potential in pre-loved items.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Commitment to sustainable practices and waste reduction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal qualification in furniture restoration, carpentry, fine art, or a related creative field.
  • Experience with upholstery or fabric work.
  • Knowledge of paint types, finishes, and decorative painting techniques.
