Job Description

Savills is seeking an experienced and passionate Viticulturist / Vineyard Manager to oversee the comprehensive management and development of a prestigious vineyard estate for one of our key clients located near Derby. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated professional to lead all aspects of vineyard operations, from cultivation and grape quality management to team leadership and budget oversight. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement annual vineyard management plans, including pruning, canopy management, pest and disease control, and soil health strategies.
  • Oversee all vineyard operations, ensuring adherence to best practices, quality standards, and sustainable viticultural principles.
  • Manage irrigation and fertilization programs tailored to specific varietals and seasonal conditions.
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of vineyard workers, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Monitor grape maturation, conduct Brix testing, and determine optimal harvest timing in close collaboration with winemakers.
  • Manage vineyard budgets, procure supplies, and maintain accurate records of all activities and expenditures.
  • Implement and maintain health and safety protocols across all vineyard operations.
  • Collaborate with external consultants, agronomists, and machinery suppliers.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant agricultural regulations and environmental standards.
  • Identify opportunities for vineyard improvement and expansion, including varietal selection and new planting strategies.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in viticulture and vineyard management.
  • Proven ability to manage all aspects of vineyard operations from dormancy to harvest.
  • Strong knowledge of grape varietals, soil science, plant pathology, and entomology relevant to viticulture.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in using vineyard management software and relevant technology.
  • Valid driving license and ability to operate vineyard machinery.
  • Commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible viticultural practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Viticulture, Oenology, Horticulture, Agronomy, or a related field.
  • Experience with cool-climate viticulture.
  • Knowledge of organic or biodynamic farming principles.
  • Financial management and budgeting experience specific to agricultural operations.
  • Experience with vineyard development projects, including site preparation and new plantings.
  • First Aid certification.
