Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Welding Inspector / Metallurgist to join our project team in Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador. This critical role involves ensuring the quality and integrity of welding processes and materials in various heavy civil and industrial construction projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting inspections, analyzing material properties, and ensuring compliance with all relevant codes, standards, and project specifications. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform visual, dimensional, and non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections on welds and fabricated components.
  • Interpret and apply welding codes, standards (e.g., AWS, API, ASME), and project specifications.
  • Review and approve welding procedures specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance qualifications (WPQ).
  • Conduct material inspections to verify compliance with specifications, including metallurgical analysis where required.
  • Identify welding discontinuities and defects, determining their cause and recommending corrective actions.
  • Prepare comprehensive inspection reports, documentation, and certifications.
  • Collaborate with project engineers, fabricators, and quality control teams to maintain high standards.
  • Ensure all safety regulations and company policies are adhered to during inspections.
  • Provide technical guidance and support regarding welding processes and material selection.

Required Skills

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI or equivalent, e.g., CSA W178.2 Level 2)
  • Strong understanding of various welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW)
  • Proficiency in interpreting blueprints, welding symbols, and technical drawings
  • Knowledge of metallurgical principles, material science, and failure analysis
  • Experience with NDT methods (PT, MT, UT, RT) and interpretation of results
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a challenging and fast-paced construction environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
  • Additional certifications in NDT (e.g., CGSB Level 2 in MT, PT, UT)
  • Experience working on large-scale infrastructure or industrial projects
  • Familiarity with Canadian welding standards and regulations
  • Proficiency with quality management software
