Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Zoo Keeper Assistant to join our team at Samford Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. This entry-level assistant position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to the welfare of our diverse animal collection and participate in vital conservation efforts. You will work closely with experienced keepers, learning the ropes of daily animal husbandry, habitat maintenance, and visitor engagement, all within a supportive and educational environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily feeding and watering routines for assigned animal species, adhering to strict dietary plans.
  • Assist with the thorough cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures, ensuring a high standard of hygiene.
  • Monitor animal health, behavior, and welfare, reporting any unusual observations to senior keepers.
  • Prepare and provide environmental enrichment activities to stimulate animal natural behaviors.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate animal records, including feeding, health, and behavioral notes.
  • Engage with visitors in an informative and friendly manner, sharing knowledge about our animals and conservation initiatives.
  • Participate in routine enclosure and facility maintenance tasks, including minor repairs and gardening.
  • Follow all safety protocols and animal handling procedures to ensure the safety of animals, staff, and visitors.

Required Skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate II or III in Captive Animals, Animal Studies, or a related field.
  • Previous volunteer experience in a zoo, wildlife park, animal shelter, or similar environment.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certificate.
  • Driver's license and reliable transportation.
