Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Livestock Health Assistant to join our regional team. This entry-level position is crucial for supporting our veterinarians and animal health officers in delivering essential services across the Bendigo region. The role primarily involves assisting with animal health surveillance, disease prevention programs, and response activities vital for protecting Victoria’s valuable livestock industries. Full training will be provided to the successful candidate, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this rewarding government role.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinary and animal health staff with field investigations, farm visits, and general site operations.
- Support the accurate collection and handling of samples for diagnostic testing and laboratory submission.
- Maintain meticulous records of observations, activities, and data using established systems.
- Help with the preparation, maintenance, and sterilization of equipment and tools.
- Participate in community engagement and outreach activities to promote animal health awareness and best practices.
- Strictly adhere to all biosecurity protocols, animal welfare standards, and occupational health and safety guidelines.
- Provide administrative support for regional operations, including scheduling and report generation, as required.
Required Skills
- Strong, demonstrable interest in animal health, welfare, and the agricultural sector.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a valued member of a collaborative team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on clear and concise reporting.
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry, email correspondence, and document management.
- Possession of a current and valid Victorian Driver's License.
- Physical capability to perform duties in various outdoor and farm environments, often in diverse weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion or active pursuit of a Certificate or Diploma in Animal Science, Agriculture, Veterinary Nursing, or a closely related field.
- Any previous experience (volunteer, work experience, or paid) in an agricultural, farm, or animal care setting.
- A foundational understanding of basic biosecurity principles and their importance.
