Job Description

Are you an aspiring journalist or editor eager to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic digital media environment? Black Press Media is seeking a enthusiastic and detail-oriented Journalism & Editorial Intern to join our digital magazine team. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to real-world editorial projects, develop your writing and editing skills, and build a portfolio with genuine bylines. You will work closely with experienced journalists and editors, learning the ropes of digital content creation, from pitching ideas to publishing engaging stories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in researching and fact-checking for various digital magazine articles and features.
  • Draft compelling content, including news briefs, feature articles, interviews, and web copy, under the guidance of senior editors.
  • Participate in editorial meetings, contributing fresh ideas and perspectives for digital content.
  • Conduct interviews with sources, as required, for stories and features.
  • Learn to optimize content for SEO and digital platforms to maximize reach.
  • Support the editorial team with content scheduling, proofreading, and basic website updates.
  • Opportunities to publish articles with your own byline, showcasing your work to a wide audience.
  • Engage with digital analytics to understand content performance and audience engagement.

Required Skills

  • Strong passion for journalism, storytelling, and digital media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Basic understanding of journalistic ethics and best practices.
  • Ability to conduct thorough research and synthesize information effectively.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft Word).
  • Eagerness to learn, adapt, and receive constructive feedback.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a journalism, communications, English, or related post-secondary program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) like WordPress.
  • Basic knowledge of SEO principles for web content.
  • Prior experience with digital photography or video editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
  • Experience with social media platforms and digital content promotion.
  • A portfolio or samples of previous writing (e.g., blog posts, school newspaper articles, personal essays).
