Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Refugee & Asylum Seeker Support Intern to join our team in Bristol. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience within a leading humanitarian NGO, supporting vulnerable individuals and families who have sought refuge or asylum in the UK. You will contribute directly to our mission by providing vital administrative, logistical, and direct support services, working alongside experienced professionals. Full training and mentorship will be provided, making this an ideal role for individuals passionate about human rights and social justice, eager to make a tangible difference without prior professional experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with administrative tasks, including data entry, record keeping, and scheduling appointments for clients.
- Support the casework team in preparing and distributing essential resources to refugees and asylum seekers.
- Help organise and facilitate support groups, workshops, and community integration activities.
- Provide information and signposting to clients regarding local services, housing, education, and healthcare.
- Accompany clients to appointments (e.g., medical, legal) as required, providing practical and emotional support.
- Contribute to the development of communication materials and outreach initiatives.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and supervision to enhance learning and development.
Required Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to empathise with diverse individuals.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- A genuine interest in refugee and asylum seeker issues and human rights.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to the internship duration.
- No prior professional experience required; a willingness to learn and a positive attitude are key.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in social sciences, humanities, law, international relations, or a related field.
- Knowledge of an additional language relevant to the local refugee community (e.g., Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish, Tigrinya, Ukrainian).
- Previous volunteer experience with vulnerable groups or in a community setting.
- Understanding of the asylum process in the UK (not essential, training will be provided).
