Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Collections Lead with a strong focus on the art sector to join our team in Kalgoorlie. This pivotal role involves overseeing the comprehensive management, conservation, and strategic development of Artbank’s extensive art collection within the specified region. The Collections Lead will ensure the highest standards of care, documentation, and logistical coordination for our valuable artworks, contributing significantly to Artbank’s mission of supporting Australian artists and engaging the community with contemporary art. This is an on-site position requiring hands-on involvement with the collection.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all aspects of art collection care, including storage, handling, transportation, and display within the Kalgoorlie region.
- Develop and implement collection management policies and procedures in alignment with national and international best practices for art conservation.
- Oversee the cataloging, inventory, and documentation of artworks using collection management databases.
- Coordinate and supervise conservation treatments, ensuring the long-term preservation of the collection.
- Manage logistics for art loans, exhibitions, and installations, including packing, shipping, and insurance.
- Conduct regular condition reports and assessments of artworks.
- Train and mentor junior staff or volunteers on best practices in art handling and collections management.
- Liaase with artists, conservators, curators, and clients regarding collection matters.
- Contribute to strategic planning for collection growth, deaccessioning, and regional engagement initiatives.
Required Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience in collections management, registrarial duties, or museum operations, specifically within the art sector.
- Demonstrated expertise in art handling, packing, and transportation techniques for various media.
- Proficiency with collection management systems (e.g., FileMaker Pro, Re:discovery, TMS).
- Strong understanding of conservation principles and preventative conservation strategies for artworks.
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Proven ability to lead projects and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with diverse stakeholders.
- Valid Australian driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Conservation, or a related field.
- Experience with budget management and procurement processes for collection-related services.
- Knowledge of Australian contemporary art and artists.
- First Aid certification.
