Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Biochemist to join our dynamic R&D team in Southampton. The successful candidate will be instrumental in designing and executing complex biochemical assays, contributing to the discovery and development of novel therapeutic compounds across various disease areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize a variety of biochemical and cell-based assays for target validation and lead compound screening.
  • Conduct experiments to investigate enzyme kinetics, protein-ligand interactions, and cellular mechanisms of action.
  • Analyze and interpret complex experimental data, preparing detailed reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment, including but not limited to HPLC, mass spectrometers, liquid handling systems, and plate readers.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with medicinal chemists, biologists, pharmacologists, and computational scientists.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records in compliance with GLP standards and company policies.
  • Contribute to scientific publications, patent applications, and intellectual property development.
  • Stay abreast of new scientific literature and technologies in biochemistry and drug discovery.

Required Skills

  • Extensive hands-on experience with biochemical assay development, optimization, and validation.
  • Proficiency in protein purification, characterization, and handling techniques.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities for presenting complex scientific data.
  • Ability to work both independently and effectively within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Thorough understanding of laboratory safety protocols and regulatory guidelines (e.g., GLP).
  • Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g., GraphPad Prism, Excel).

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Prior industry experience (2+ years) in pharmaceutical or biotechnology R&D.
  • Experience with high-throughput screening (HTS) and automation.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics tools for large-scale data analysis.
  • Familiarity with drug discovery processes and preclinical development stages.
  • Experience with structural biology techniques (e.g., X-ray crystallography, NMR) or cryo-EM.
