Job Description
We are excited to offer an invaluable opportunity for an enthusiastic and curious individual to join our research team as a Sociolinguistics & Dialectology Research Intern. This internship is designed for those passionate about language variation, social identity, and regional dialects, providing hands-on experience in cutting-edge linguistic research. You will work closely with leading academics, contributing to ongoing projects that explore how language is used in different social contexts and across various communities. This is an entry-level position perfect for students or recent graduates eager to apply their academic knowledge in a practical research setting, gain mentorship, and develop essential research skills. Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the collection and transcription of linguistic data, including interviews, surveys, and spoken corpora.
- Support the qualitative and quantitative analysis of sociolinguistic and dialectological data under supervision.
- Conduct comprehensive literature reviews on specific topics within sociolinguistics and dialectology.
- Help in the preparation of research materials, such as questionnaires, consent forms, and interview protocols.
- Contribute to the drafting of research reports, presentations, and academic papers.
- Organise and maintain research databases and archives.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on research methodology and findings.
Required Skills
- Strong interest and foundational knowledge in language, linguistics, sociology, or related fields.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy in data handling.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
- Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel).
- Enthusiasm for learning new research methodologies and analytical tools.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Linguistics, English Language, Sociology, Anthropology, or a related discipline.
- Basic understanding of qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
- Familiarity with linguistic transcription conventions (e.g., IPA, CHAT).
- Previous experience with academic research projects (e.g., term papers, minor projects).
