Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and meticulous Payroll Officer to join our dynamic finance team. In this pivotal public sector role, you will be responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for a large and diverse workforce, ensuring strict compliance with all relevant awards, agreements, legislation, and internal policies. You will be instrumental in maintaining the integrity of our payroll system, contributing to a smooth and efficient operation that supports our dedicated employees. This role demands a high level of attention to detail, discretion, and a proactive approach to problem-solving within a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Process end-to-end payroll for a large volume of employees on a fortnightly basis, including salaries, wages, superannuation, leave entitlements, allowances, and deductions.
- Ensure accurate interpretation and application of industrial awards, enterprise agreements, and relevant legislation (e.g., Fair Work Act, Superannuation Guarantee, ATO requirements).
- Reconcile payroll data, prepare payroll reports, and assist with month-end and year-end payroll processing.
- Handle payroll-related queries from employees and managers professionally and efficiently.
- Administer new starters, terminations, and changes to employee records in the payroll system.
- Manage and process superannuation contributions, PAYG withholding, and other statutory payments.
- Assist with payroll system upgrades, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all data privacy regulations.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a dedicated payroll processing role, preferably within a large organisation or public sector environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of Australian payroll legislation, awards, and superannuation requirements.
- Proficiency with large-scale payroll software (e.g., Chris21, SAP HCM, Aurion, TechnologyOne).
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a high-volume environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant qualification in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Human Resources.
- Experience working with Chris21 payroll system.
- Prior experience within a local government or other public sector agency.
- Knowledge of time and attendance systems.
