Job Description
PSE&G is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Cartography & Spatial Data Intern to join our team in Newark, NJ. This is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data management within a large utility company. The intern will assist our GIS and engineering teams in various projects, focusing on mapping, data collection, analysis, and visualization of our extensive utility infrastructure. This on-site internship offers valuable exposure to real-world GIS challenges and the chance to contribute to critical operational initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the creation, maintenance, and updating of various maps and spatial datasets using GIS software.
- Support the collection and digitization of geographic features and utility infrastructure information.
- Perform basic spatial analysis to identify patterns, relationships, and trends in utility data.
- Help prepare data for reports, presentations, and internal communications.
- Ensure data accuracy and consistency through quality control checks.
- Learn and apply best practices for cartographic design and data management.
- Collaborate with engineers and other technical staff on GIS-related projects.
- Document GIS processes and procedures.
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of GIS principles and cartography
- Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to learn new software and concepts quickly
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geography, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field with an emphasis on GIS
- Experience with data entry, data cleaning, and quality assurance processes
- Basic knowledge of database concepts
- Prior academic project experience involving spatial data analysis or map creation
