Job Description

Join our dedicated team as a Fisheries Officer (Assistant) and contribute to the vital work of environmental protection and sustainable fisheries management in the Newcastle region. This entry-level assistant role is perfect for individuals passionate about marine and freshwater environments, offering an opportunity to learn and grow within a supportive government agency. You will assist experienced officers in routine field operations, compliance activities, and community engagement, playing a crucial part in safeguarding our precious aquatic resources. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior Fisheries Officers in conducting patrols and inspections of fishing activities on waterways and at fish markets.
  • Participate in monitoring and surveillance activities to detect and deter illegal fishing practices.
  • Contribute to the collection of fisheries data, including catch samples and environmental observations.
  • Help educate the public and industry stakeholders on fisheries regulations and conservation best practices.
  • Support the investigation of reported offenses, gathering evidence and preparing documentation.
  • Assist in the maintenance and deployment of equipment used in fisheries management and enforcement.
  • Participate in community outreach programs and awareness campaigns related to aquatic conservation.
  • Perform administrative tasks as required to support team operations.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated interest in environmental protection, fisheries, or aquatic ecosystems.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with the public.
  • Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Physical fitness to undertake field duties, which may include working outdoors in varying weather conditions and on marine vessels.
  • Valid Australian Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Aquaculture, Environmental Science, Conservation and Land Management, or a related field.
  • Experience with boating and marine safety.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Knowledge of NSW fisheries legislation and regulations.
