Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Surgical Instrument Sterilization Technician to join our hospital back-office team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring they are safe and ready for use in operating rooms and other clinical areas. This position requires strict adherence to sterilization protocols, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of infection control. As a key member of our healthcare support services, you will play a vital role in patient safety and the efficient operation of our surgical departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments and medical equipment according to established protocols and manufacturer instructions.
  • Inspect instruments for functionality and damage, ensuring all items are in proper working order before sterilization.
  • Assemble surgical trays and instrument sets accurately, verifying all components are present and correctly arranged.
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and other specialized machinery, performing routine checks and maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles, inventory, and equipment usage.
  • Transport sterile and unsterile equipment safely and efficiently between departments.
  • Adhere to all infection control policies, safety regulations, and quality assurance standards.
  • Collaborate with surgical and nursing staff to ensure timely delivery of sterile instruments and equipment.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow precise written and verbal instructions and protocols.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, lift and move equipment, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping.
  • Understanding of infection control principles and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Commitment to patient safety and quality care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) or Sterile Processing Technician program.
  • Certification as a Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CSIT) or Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS).
  • Previous experience in a sterile processing department within a hospital or healthcare setting.
