Job Description

Join the City of Calgary’s Public Works team as a dedicated Street Sweeper Operator! We are seeking reliable and skilled individuals to operate our street sweeping equipment, ensuring our city’s roads, pathways, and public spaces remain clean and safe for all residents. This role involves early morning starts, contributing directly to the daily upkeep and aesthetic appeal of Calgary. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate street sweeping equipment (mechanical and vacuum sweepers) efficiently and safely on designated routes.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any mechanical issues or damage.
  • Conduct minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment as required.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations, traffic laws, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs and records of work performed, including routes, hours, and materials collected.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding operational status and any incidents.
  • Assist with other Public Works duties as needed, including snow removal during winter months.
  • Ensure public safety by operating equipment responsibly around pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Respond to and address public inquiries or concerns politely and professionally.

Required Skills

  • Valid Class 3 or Class 5 Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement (or equivalent provincial license for operating heavy vehicles).
  • Proven ability to operate heavy equipment safely and effectively.
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and road regulations.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, and reaching.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for routine equipment checks and minor troubleshooting.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Street Sweeper Operator or similar heavy equipment operation (e.g., snowplow, grader).
  • Familiarity with Calgary's street network and municipal bylaws.
  • Experience working in a municipal or public service environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable with early morning work schedules.
