Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Civic Tech & Open Data Intern to join our team in Forest Acres, SC. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals passionate about technology, public service, and data-driven solutions. You will contribute to projects that leverage open data, civic technology platforms, and innovative strategies to enhance government operations and citizen engagement. Full training will be provided, making this an ideal opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the rapidly evolving field of civic tech.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in researching, collecting, and analyzing open data sets from various government sources.
- Support the development and improvement of civic technology tools and platforms.
- Help organize and facilitate community engagement workshops and data hackathons.
- Prepare reports and presentations on project progress and findings.
- Contribute to content creation for our website and social media channels, promoting open data initiatives.
- Collaborate with team members on various administrative and project-specific tasks.
- Learn and apply best practices in data governance, privacy, and security in a civic context.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in technology, government, and public service.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace).
- Ability to conduct thorough research and synthesize information.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Eagerness to learn new tools and technologies.
- Basic understanding of data concepts or willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Public Administration, Political Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Urban Planning, or a related field.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) or spreadsheet software beyond basics.
- Some exposure to web development concepts (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) or scripting languages (Python) is a plus, but not required.
- Experience with GIS software or mapping tools.
