Job Description

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Customs Officer Trainees in Leicester. This is an exciting opportunity to embark on a vital career path within the UK’s border security and trade enforcement. No prior experience is required, as full comprehensive training will be provided to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in this crucial role. As a Customs Officer Trainee, you will play a key part in protecting our borders, facilitating legitimate trade, and ensuring compliance with customs regulations. You will learn how to identify and deter illegal activities, verify goods, and process documentation, contributing directly to the safety and economic well-being of the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undergo extensive training to understand customs laws, regulations, and procedures.
  • Assist senior officers with the inspection and examination of goods, vehicles, and luggage.
  • Learn to identify suspicious items and potential breaches of customs law.
  • Accurately record and manage documentation related to imports and exports.
  • Provide clear and accurate information to traders and the public under supervision.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues and other agencies to ensure border security.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and integrity in all duties.

Required Skills

  • No prior experience in customs or law enforcement; full training provided.
  • A strong commitment to public service and upholding the law.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to tasks.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic IT literacy and willingness to learn new systems.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK and willingness to undergo necessary security checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Achieved A-levels (or equivalent) or have demonstrable strong academic ability.
  • An interest in international trade, law, or public administration.
  • Previous experience in a customer service or administrative role.
