Job Description
Are you passionate about Scotland’s incredible wildlife and natural heritage? NatureScot is offering a unique, government-funded opportunity to join our team as a Trainee Wildlife Conservation Officer. This entry-level role requires no prior experience in conservation, as full comprehensive training will be provided to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to protect and manage Scotland’s diverse ecosystems. You will work alongside experienced professionals, contributing directly to on-the-ground conservation projects, species monitoring, and public engagement initiatives. Key Responsibilities
- Assist experienced officers with wildlife surveys and monitoring activities across various Scottish habitats.
- Support habitat management and restoration projects, including practical fieldwork such as planting, path maintenance, and invasive species control.
- Engage with local communities, landowners, and visitors, providing information on wildlife, conservation, and promoting responsible access.
- Help maintain equipment, vehicles, and records related to conservation projects and daily operations.
- Participate actively in all provided training programs and commit to continuous professional development.
- Report observed wildlife activities, incidents, or potential threats to senior officers promptly.
- Follow all health and safety guidelines rigorously during fieldwork and office-based tasks.
Required Skills
- A genuine passion for wildlife and the natural environment of Scotland.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a diverse team.
- Willingness to learn, adapt to new challenges, and apply new knowledge.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable interacting with various stakeholders.
- Basic physical fitness suitable for fieldwork in varied outdoor conditions and weather.
- Commitment to NatureScot’s mission, values, and environmental protection principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Full UK driving license, due to the need for travel to various field sites.
- Basic understanding of Scottish wildlife, ecology, or environmental issues.
- Previous experience with outdoor activities, practical land management, or volunteering.
- First Aid certification or willingness to obtain it.
- Proficiency in Gaelic, as this is valued in some parts of Scotland.
